What no one tells new moms about what childbirth can do to their bodies
The Better Care Reconciliation Act, Republicans’ latest attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare, would let states opt out of insuring prenatal and maternity health care. It could mean a return to the time before Obamacare, when some 88 percent of individual insurance plans didn’t cover maternity care at all. It would also gut Medicaid, which covers half of the 4 million childbirths that happen each year in the US.
If the bill passes and gets signed into law, it would be particularly poorly timed. More American women today are dying in childbirth than anywhere else in the developed world.
